Spelling helps reading

Among the countless educationist lunacies is the belittling of correct spelling. This

Recursion. As much research has shown that the best way to become a good speller is to read (which, if you think about it, is common sense; ask a good speller how he recalls how a word is spelled, and every one will tell you he visualizes it, and never refers to spelling rules. And he can visualize it because he has read and seen it).

Likewise, much research has shown that the best way to build your vocabulary is to read. And surprise, that the best way to get a higher score on that reading comprehension section of the exam is, why yes, to read!

So true!

I have grasped this without the benefit of massive research, just through sheer observation and common sense.

The best way to get a handle on new words is to see them in various contexts and through multiple exposures.
